Elementary School, Middle School, High School, Community College and Continuing Education
Science Educators are invited to attend a special TeacherTECH Science Series workshop focused on
questioning and assessment techniques that support learning. Participants will
engage in incorporating these techniques into lessons that they bring with them.

Workshop Description

Questioning and assessment are central to all learning and teaching. From a teacher’s perspective, good questioning reveals prior knowledge, demonstrates empathy and understanding, and informs one’s practice. For the student, good questioning can serve as a model of how to inquire about the world, engage one’s curiosity, and empower him or herself to pursue more knowledge. Assessment, when properly used, provides frequent feedback to the student and teacher concerning the progress of learning in the classroom. Apply the techniques shared in this seminar to a specific lesson you wish to revise.

Note: Participants should bring a lesson and be prepared to collectively share within small groups to begin revising it based on the ideas featured in the workshop.

Goals

Share several research-based and classroom-tested frameworks for questioning and assessment techniques that support learning.

Provide a packet of successful techniques that can be used to transform the classroom to promote critical-thinking and reflective practices that increase long-term concept retention.

Present video examples that incorporate techniques.

Have a workshop that is collaborative and creative such that a final product is personally designed for each participant to take back to the classroom and implement.
